Electricity: Morocco Accelerates Its Interconnections with Europe and Strengthens Its Role as an Energy Hub

Morocco’s Electric Network Development Strategy
Morocco is advancing its strategy to develop its electrical network by strengthening interconnections with Europe while preparing new projects aimed at Africa. This initiative is designed to support the growing prominence of renewable energies, enhance energy security, and position the Kingdom as a pivotal platform for electricity exchanges between the two continents.
Driven by significant investments in electrical infrastructure, Morocco aims to increase its exchange capacities with European partners to meet the rising demands associated with the energy transition and integrate renewable energies into the national grid. This direction aligns with a long-term vision to solidify the Kingdom’s status as a regional energy hub.
Interconnection Projects with Various European Countries
Already connected to Spain through two underwater interconnections, Morocco is working on several new strategic projects.
Among these is a proposed electrical link with Portugal, currently under study, intended to enhance the supply security of both countries and diversify energy exchanges. In parallel, various interconnection projects with France and, in the longer term, Germany are being developed to export green electricity produced in Morocco to the European market.
These future infrastructures will facilitate the transportation of electricity generated by Moroccan solar and wind farms to Europe, while enhancing the resilience of electrical networks on both sides of the Mediterranean.
The South at the Heart of Morocco’s Energy Strategy
Beyond Europe, Morocco also aims to strengthen its energy integration with African countries.
This approach is part of the Kingdom’s South-South cooperation strategy, with the ambition of gradually developing a regional electrical network capable of promoting energy exchanges and supporting the continent’s economic development.
The enhancement of interconnections to the South should also facilitate the integration of future green hydrogen projects and substantial renewable production capacities planned in the southern provinces.
A Lever for Energy Sovereignty
The acceleration of interconnections addresses several strategic objectives.
It will enhance the stability of the electrical network, optimize the integration of renewable energies, secure national supply during periods of high demand, and create new opportunities for exporting clean electricity.
In a context characterized by the rapid acceleration of global energy transition, Morocco aims to reinforce its position as a reliable supplier of green energy and a strategic partner for Europe and Africa.
Ambition in Service of Energy Transition
Thanks to its solar and wind resources, developing infrastructure, and strategic geographic location, the Kingdom affirms its intention to become a major player in the regional electricity market.
Future interconnection projects are expected to bolster Morocco’s attractiveness to international investors while supporting national goals for decarbonization, energy security, and sustainable development.
