Larache Hosts a Study Day on “Sustainable Cities”: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives

In a context marked by accelerated environmental and territorial changes on a global scale, the city of Larache hosted a study day themed “Larache, a Sustainable City: Challenges and Solutions”. This event was organized by the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers in Morocco—Larache branch—in partnership with the Multidisciplinary Faculty of Larache and several institutional stakeholders.
This initiative is part of the project “Towards a Sustainable City in Larache,” supported by the municipal council, aiming to develop an integrated territorial vision that reconciles economic, social, and environmental dimensions while strengthening local governance.
A Significant and Diverse Participation
The meeting gathered over 90 participants, including officials, experts, educational and administrative staff, as well as students, researchers, and civil society actors. This mobilization reflects the growing interest in sustainable development issues at the local level.
An Opening Marked by Calls for Collective Commitment
The inaugural session featured several official speeches emphasizing the need to combine efforts to successfully achieve ecological transition.
The dean of the Multidisciplinary Faculty highlighted the university’s central role in knowledge production and training skills capable of proposing innovative solutions.
Meanwhile, the representative of the Provincial Education Directorate stressed the importance of promoting environmental culture within schools and involving young people more actively.
The president of the organizing association emphasized Larache’s potential to become a model for sustainable cities.
Scientific Presentations Focused on Circular Economy
The scientific sessions shed light on key themes, notably waste management and the transition towards a circular economy, regarded as essential levers for reducing waste and valuing resources.
Speakers insisted that waste management has transcended technical boundaries to become a strategic issue related to environmental protection and public health, necessitating innovative approaches such as sorting, recycling, and resource recovery.
Additionally, emphasis was placed on the importance of participatory governance and integrated urban planning, as well as the need to strengthen public policies in the face of low recycling rates at the national level.
Water and Sanitation Management: Towards Sustainable Solutions
The management of water resources and sanitation was a central topic during this day. Several structural projects were presented, particularly concerning wastewater treatment, resource reuse, and energy generation from biogas.
These initiatives align with a circular economy logic aimed at reducing pressure on natural resources and minimizing environmental impacts.
Empowering Youth and Civil Society
Particular attention was given to training youth and associative actors through a workshop focused on advocacy and public policy influence mechanisms.
Participants were made aware of tools like monitoring, documentation, digital campaigns, and fieldwork, while highlighting the essential role of environmental clubs in promoting ecological culture.
Honoring Exemplary Environmental Initiatives
This day also featured the recognition of several actors engaged in promoting environmental sustainability and development, acknowledging their efforts to disseminate best practices and encourage local initiatives.

The discussions resulted in a series of strategic recommendations, including:
- the adoption of an integrated and coordinated urban model;
