Morocco is accelerating its energy transition through a massive development of renewable energy and strengthening its electrical infrastructure, as part of a strategy aiming to increase the share of green energy to over 52% of the national electricity mix by 2030.
1,730 MW Additional Capacity from Renewable Energy
The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, announced that the Kingdom has added nearly 1,730 megawatts of electricity production capacity exclusively from renewable sources since the beginning of the current government mandate.
This dynamic is part of Morocco’s goal to strengthen its energy sovereignty, reduce external dependence, and diversify its electricity production sources.
Eight New Authorizations in Three Months
The Minister also revealed that eight new authorizations have been granted in the first quarter of 2026 for energy projects representing a total capacity exceeding 2,760 MW.
This volume accounts for nearly 64% of all capacities authorized since the launch of the national renewable energy strategy until the end of 2025, illustrating the unprecedented acceleration of the sector.
A New Electrical Plan by 2030
The 2025-2030 electrical equipment plan foresees the addition of 12.4 gigawatts of additional capacity, with approximately 80% coming from renewable energy sources.
The government also aims to quadruple annual investments dedicated to green energy and to increase investments in the national electrical grid by more than fivefold to support rising energy demand.
Reforms to Encourage Investment
On the legislative front, the ministry has accelerated reforms governing renewable electricity production and energy self-generation.
These regulatory developments allow for the introduction of green electricity origin certificates, ensuring that the energy produced comes from renewable sources. This mechanism is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Moroccan products in international markets amid tightening environmental standards and carbon taxes.
Energy Storage and Digitalization of the Grid
The new provisions now allow citizens and businesses to develop energy storage installations from renewable sources, marking a first in Morocco aimed at improving the stability of the electrical grid.
The ministry is also continuing the publication of regulatory texts related to smart meters, green certification mechanisms, and the operating conditions of self-production installations.
Morocco Confirms Its Regional Ambitions
Through this strategy, Morocco is consolidating its position as a major regional player in the energy transition, focusing on solar, wind, and green hydrogen.
The Kingdom aspires to make renewable energy a strategic lever for economic competitiveness, industrial decarbonization, and attractiveness for international investments.
