Morocco Enhances Its Air Capabilities with State-of-the-Art AIM-120D4 AMRAAM Missiles

Morocco is advancing the modernization of its air defense capabilities by integrating the American program for the development of long-range air-to-air missiles, specifically the latest version of the AIM-120 AMRAAM, the AIM-120D4/C-9. This move reaffirms the Kingdom’s commitment to enhancing the operational performance of the Royal Air Forces in the face of new security challenges.
A New Generation of Enhanced Missiles
According to a recent American document, Morocco is among the countries benefiting from the AIM-120D4/C-9 development program, an evolution of the renowned AMRAAM missile aimed at boosting the combat capabilities of modern fighter jets.
This version incorporates several technological innovations, including a more precise guidance system, improved resistance to electronic jamming, and enhanced reliability during aerial missions in complex environments.
Thanks to these improvements, pilots will have a more effective engagement capability against targets at long distances while maintaining a high level of operational flexibility.
Integration with Moroccan F-16V Block 72
The arrival of these missiles is part of a broader modernization program for the Moroccan fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcons, which is currently being upgraded to the F-16V Viper (Block 72) standard.
This compatibility will enable the Royal Air Forces to fully leverage the new capabilities provided by these aircraft, particularly in areas of air superiority and long-range interception.
One of the Most Advanced Air-to-Air Missiles in the World
The AIM-120D4/C-9 is one of the most sophisticated air-to-air missiles available today.
It boasts a range exceeding 160 kilometers under optimal conditions and can fly at speeds greater than four times that of sound.
The missile is equipped with an active radar and features “Fire & Forget” technology, which allows it to autonomously pursue its target post-launch. A two-way data link also enables trajectory updates in flight, providing greater precision and flexibility during operations.
Enhanced Deterrence Capability
Future F-16 Block 72 jets of the Royal Air Forces will be capable of carrying up to eight AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, complemented by two AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles designed for close combat.
This configuration will significantly strengthen the offensive and defensive capabilities of the Moroccan military aviation, while also enhancing its deterrence capacity in a regional context marked by continuously evolving security challenges.
With this new development, Morocco reaffirms its strategy of modernizing its military equipment and continues to build an air force capable of meeting the demands of contemporary operations.
