Nador West Med: 34,000 Jobs Expected in the Short Term

Nador West Med: A Major Maritime and Industrial Development Set to Launch

The Nador West Med port and industrial complex is on the brink of a significant milestone with the impending operation of its first terminal in the coming days. This ambitious project, which involves a combined investment of 54 billion dirhams from both public and private sectors, is expected to create approximately 14,000 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs in the short term, according to Idriss Aarabi, General Director of Tanger Med.

These forecasts were discussed on Wednesday, October 28, during a statement to the Mediterranean Press Agency (MAP), following a working session chaired by King Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace in Rabat. The meeting was dedicated to assessing the progress of major port projects within the Kingdom.

Nador West Med: Capacity for 5.3 Million Containers

In its first phase, the Nador West Med complex will feature a container terminal with the capacity to handle 3.5 million units. A second terminal, capable of processing an additional 1.8 million containers, is set to commence operations in April 2027.

Ultimately, the two facilities will provide a combined capacity of 5.3 million containers, thereby enhancing the logistical infrastructure of northeastern Morocco and strengthening the Kingdom’s ability to accommodate international maritime trade flows.

The project extends beyond mere transshipment and handling activities; it also includes terminals specifically for hydrocarbons and liquefied natural gas (LNG). This development aims to bolster the country’s capacity to manage energy products and contribute to its security of supply.

34,000 Jobs Expected to Boost the Oriental Region

Beyond its port and industrial implications, Nador West Med is envisioned as a catalyst for economic development in the Oriental region. The anticipated 14,000 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs herald a promising outlook for the regional job market.

To support this growth, training programs tailored to meet the requirements of future port and industrial activities will need to be implemented. According to Idriss Aarabi, this initiative aims to facilitate job placement for young people and align available skills with the needs of businesses poised to establish themselves around the complex.

Thus, the goal is to transform infrastructure investments into tangible economic and social benefits for local populations. The qualification of the workforce will be crucial in ensuring that residents of the region can take advantage of the new employment opportunities.

Tanger Med 3: An Investment of 8 Billion Dirhams

Alongside the operational launch of Nador West Med, Morocco is preparing a new expansion of the Tanger Med complex through the Tanger Med 3 project, which will require an estimated investment of 8 billion dirhams.

According to the General Director of Tanger Med, this expansion aims to elevate the complex’s capacity to 20 million containers, solidifying its status among the world’s top ten ports specializing in container traffic.

This project aligns with Morocco’s ongoing efforts to develop its port infrastructure, with the goal of supporting international trade growth, enhancing the Kingdom’s logistical competitiveness, and strengthening its appeal to industrial investors and maritime operators.

Morocco Strengthens Its Strategic Port Network

Nador West Med and Tanger Med 3 are central to Morocco’s port infrastructure development strategy. The former will enhance the logistical capabilities of the Oriental region and integrate energy facilities, while the latter will accommodate an increase in Tanger Med’s capacity.

The working session chaired by King Mohammed VI on Wednesday, October 28, focused on the progress of both projects and the next steps for their realization.

Through these investments, Morocco aims to solidify its role in global value chains and develop port platforms capable of supporting commercial, industrial, and energy activities. The success of this strategy will also hinge on creating the announced jobs and ensuring that local populations benefit from the economic impacts of these projects.
