SIDATTES 2026: Research and Innovation at the Heart of Sustainable Development in Oases

Scientific Research and Innovation at the Forefront of the 15th International Date Fair in Morocco
Scientific research and innovation were the focus of a meeting held on Thursday in Erfoud, Errachidia province, as part of the 15th edition of the International Date Fair (SIDATTES 2026) in Morocco.
This event brought together experts, researchers, and industry professionals to discuss ways to enhance the sustainability of date palm cultivation and promote integrated territorial development. The discussions particularly centered on the rational management of natural resources, improving the productivity of date palms, and adding value to oasis products.
During the gathering, Lamiae Ghaouti, the director of the National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA), emphasized the critical role of scientific research in addressing challenges facing oasis territories, such as climate change, water resource scarcity, and soil degradation.
She highlighted the necessity of adopting a holistic approach that balances agricultural production improvement, natural resource preservation, and local development. In this context, research and innovation are essential levers for strengthening the resilience of the date palm industry and sustainably preserving oasis ecosystems.
The discussions also explored the opportunities presented by new technologies and the circular economy in developing more sustainable agricultural models that reconcile economic performance and environmental protection.
Particular attention was given to the use of artificial intelligence in the post-harvest processing of dates, as well as the potential for enhancing local resources to boost the industry’s competitiveness.
The meeting comprised two sessions dedicated, on one hand, to innovations and sustainable resource management aimed at reinforcing the resilience of oasis systems, and on the other hand, to the valorization of oasis products, emerging technologies, and the circular economy.
Held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the 15th edition of SIDATTES continues until November 1. Organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty, the fair features over 230 exhibitors from Morocco and abroad across a 40,000 square meter area and is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors.
