The CR450 Train: China Pushes the Boundaries of High-Speed Rail Once Again

China has reached a new milestone in high-speed rail transportation with the CR450 prototype, a train that aims to surpass current global standards and push the performance of the TGV into the background.
Unprecedented Performance on Rails
Recently unveiled by the China State Railway Group, the CR450 boasts remarkable performance with a top speed of 450 km/h during testing and a projected commercial speed of 400 km/h. In comparison, Chinese CR400 trains reach speeds of 350 km/h, while the French TGV typically operates around 320 km/h, despite having a much higher experimental record.
This new train would significantly reduce travel time between Beijing and Shanghai to just 2 hours and 30 minutes over nearly 1,200 kilometers, representing a considerable time-saving on one of the busiest routes in the country.
Optimized Design for Speed and Efficiency
The CR450 has been designed to improve aerodynamics and reduce resistance. It is 10% lighter than previous models and reduces operational resistance by 22%. Its design features an elongated nose and optimized surfaces aimed at enhancing air penetration and stability at very high speeds.
Technological Innovation and Onboard Comfort
Beyond speed, the CR450 incorporates several major technological innovations. It features a water-cooled permanent magnet traction system, redesigned bogies, and more than 4,000 sensors that enable real-time performance monitoring.
The passenger experience has also been enhanced, with a reduction in interior noise of approximately 2 decibels and a 4% increase in service space. The train is equipped with advanced safety systems, including a multilayer emergency braking system and critical situation detection devices.
Significant Technical Constraints
Achieving such speeds, however, requires high technical demands. The railway infrastructure must be perfectly suited, particularly with very wide curves: at 400 km/h, a curvature radius of about 11 kilometers is necessary to ensure the train’s stability.
A Strategy for Global Expansion
With over 47,000 kilometers of high-speed rail lines, China is already a global leader in this sector. It is also exporting its expertise, as demonstrated in Indonesia with the Jakarta-Bandung line and in Serbia with the Belgrade-Novi Sad line.
Thus, the CR450 is part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening China’s position in the global railway market, as it awaits the completion of ongoing testing before becoming operational.
