The United States Falls to Belgium in Friendly Match (5-2)

The U.S. men’s national soccer team suffered a defeat against Belgium (5-2) on Saturday in Atlanta during a friendly match, just over two and a half months ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which they will host.
Before nearly 67,000 spectators in a venue set to host several World Cup matches, including a semi-final, the U.S. started positively, with Weston McKennie scoring the opening goal in the 39th minute.
However, the Belgians quickly unleashed a barrage of goals, equalizing through Zeno Debast in the 45th minute, followed by strikes from Amadou Onana (53rd), Charles de Ketelaere from the penalty spot (59th), and a brace from Dodi Lukebakio (68th and 82nd), before a final goal from American Patrick Agyemang in the 87th minute.
In a press statement after the match, U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasized the importance of facing high-level opponents in preparation for the World Cup, asserting that such matches serve as a valuable step in their preparation process.
“We need matches against great teams to arrive at the World Cup at our best level,” Pochettino stated.
“Confidence is good, but if we want to win the World Cup, we must first get through the group stage. Do you think Paraguay won’t fight?” added the former Tottenham and Paris SG manager.
As a co-host of the tournament alongside Mexico and Canada, the U.S. will compete in Group D, alongside Paraguay, Australia, and the winner of the playoff between Kosovo and Turkey.
The U.S. team will continue its preparation with a match against Portugal, scheduled for Tuesday, also in Atlanta.
