The United States Supports a Green Ammonia Plant Project in the Moroccan Sahara
The United States is strengthening its economic cooperation with Morocco through a new large-scale industrial project in the southern provinces. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has announced funding for a strategic study aimed at preparing the construction of a green ammonia production plant, utilizing cutting-edge American technologies.
This initiative is part of the ongoing development of renewable energies in the Kingdom and confirms the increasing interest of American investors in industrial projects established in Morocco’s Sahara.
A future plant capable of producing 560,000 tons per year
The project plans to establish a large-capacity industrial unit dedicated to the production of green ammonia. Once operational, the plant is expected to achieve an annual capacity of approximately 560,000 tons, contributing to the economic development of the southern provinces and strengthening Morocco’s clean energy sector.
The objective is also to support the production of sustainable energy solutions, in the context of growing global demand for green hydrogen and decarbonized fuels.
An American consortium in charge of technical studies
The pre-engineering study (Pre-FEED) will be conducted by a consortium of American companies led by Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), in collaboration with GE Vernova, Electric Hydrogen, and Terrapizz.
The work will focus on selecting electrolysis technologies, assessing energy needs, sizing industrial facilities, and developing the financial, commercial, and technical models necessary for the project’s realization.
The total cost of this study program is estimated at $5.7 million. It will also address environmental, regulatory, and economic aspects to ensure the viability of the future industrial complex.
Washington reaffirms its support for investments in Moroccan Sahara
At the signing of the agreement, the U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan, emphasized that this initiative reflects the strategic importance of American investments in the southern provinces.
According to him, American companies are leveraging their technological expertise to support innovative projects in the energy and industrial sectors, fostering the creation of skilled jobs, promoting local economic development, and strengthening cooperation between Rabat and Washington.

This new funding showcases the strength of economic relations between Morocco and the United States and confirms their shared commitment to supporting high-value industrial projects.
