Green Basin: Jorf Lasfar Prepares to Become a Hub for Batteries and Green Fuels

The port of Jorf Lasfar is set to undergo a significant transformation with the launch of the Green Basin project, an ambitious expansion led by the National Ports Agency (ANP). The aim is to establish this infrastructure as an industrial and logistical hub dedicated to electric batteries, green fuels, and new sectors of energy transition.

To take this next step, the ANP has initiated several technical and geotechnical studies aimed at preparing the port’s expansion and defining the necessary future developments to meet the needs of emerging industries.

An Expansion to Anticipate Tomorrow’s Energy Flows

The Green Basin project aims to adapt port infrastructure to the new logistical flows associated with clean energy.

Beyond the port’s traditional activities, historically focused on phosphates, chemicals, and energy imports, this expansion will accommodate value chains linked to batteries for electric vehicles, electrolytes, strategic materials, and fuels derived from green hydrogen.

An Expanding Industrial Ecosystem

The back port of Jorf Lasfar is already experiencing a profound industrial transformation.

Several projects related to the manufacturing of components for electric batteries, advanced materials, and energy transition technologies are currently being developed in the industrial platform area. This concentration of investments aims to create a truly integrated ecosystem, combining industrial production, port logistics, and exportation.

The Green Basin project is specifically designed to provide industries with the maritime infrastructure needed to support this scale-up.

Green Hydrogen at the Core of the Strategy

The future port basin will also incorporate activities related to decarbonized fuels.

Authorities, in particular, anticipate the development of projects utilizing green hydrogen, green ammonia, and e-fuels—sectors expected to play an increasingly significant role in the decarbonization of transport and industry.

This direction aligns with the national strategy to position Morocco among the leading players in renewable energies and electric mobility value chains.

A Lever to Strengthen Morocco’s Competitiveness

Through Green Basin, Jorf Lasfar aims to transcend its status as the country’s leading mineral port to become a next-generation industrial and energy platform.

By enhancing its logistical capacities and facilitating the establishment of new high-value-added industries, the project is expected to bolster Morocco’s position as a regional hub for green technologies, battery production, and future fuels, while also increasing its attractiveness to international investors.
