License Plates: Morocco Standardizes the Model Used Nationally and Abroad
The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) has announced the standardization of vehicle license plate models and dimensions, whether they are used in Morocco or abroad. This measure follows a decision by the Minister of Transport and Logistics aimed at unifying the plates used in both contexts.
Decision No. 640.26, which amends and supplements Decision No. 2711.10 from September 29, 2010, concerning the registration of motor vehicles and trailers, was published on August 3, 2026, in Official Bulletin No. 7531.
This reform primarily aims to address the practical challenges associated with the coexistence of two license plate models: one used in Morocco and the other for international circulation. The new framework establishes a standardization of their shape, dimensions, and key characteristics.
However, the plates currently in circulation will not be replaced immediately. For vehicles registered in the standard series and equipped with plates lacking Latin characters, these will remain valid until the first ownership transfer, in accordance with the rules applicable for circulation within the national territory.
Regarding vehicles in the standard series intended for international traffic that display Latin characters and the distinctive “MA” sign separate from the plate, the old models will remain valid until December 31, 2026.
In contrast, the new unified model is now mandatory for any new vehicle registration operation, whether the vehicle is acquired in Morocco or imported from abroad, regardless of whether it is new or used. This requirement has been in effect since the publication of the decision in the Official Bulletin.
NARSA also urges manufacturers of license plates to strictly adhere to the new regulatory standards, particularly regarding the shape, dimensions, and specifications of the various elements that make up the plates.
Through this standardization, the authorities aim to simplify registration procedures and facilitate the international circulation of Moroccan vehicles, while also eliminating the differences between plates used domestically and those intended for international traffic.
