Morocco Accelerates the Modernization of Its C-130 Fleet Through an American Partnership
The Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) C-130 military transport aircraft are entering a new phase of technological modernization as part of a multiyear program led by the American company L3Harris Technologies. The goal is to enhance onboard systems, improve the operational availability of the fleet, and extend the service life of the aircraft.
L3Harris Technologies has announced that it has completed the initial inspections of the first Moroccan aircraft integrated into the program, marking the official start of modernization operations for this fleet, which is a crucial component of the Moroccan Air Force’s transport and logistical support capabilities.
The aircraft in question is currently located at a L3Harris facility in Waco, Texas, where it is undergoing maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, alongside the integration of several technological enhancements.
The program is not limited to traditional maintenance. It includes the modernization of various equipment and systems to enhance the operational capabilities of the aircraft without replacing them with new platforms.
This work includes the installation of a new emergency device, the modernization of the digital engine parameter display, as well as upgrades to the avionics systems and the integration of newer digital technologies.
The chosen approach involves retaining some of the existing mission systems onboard while modernizing the components that require updates. This strategy aims to extend the lifespan of the aircraft while enhancing their performance and maximizing the value of existing platforms.
Additional Moroccan aircraft are expected to join the L3Harris facilities soon to undergo the planned maintenance and modernization operations as part of the program.
Some phases of the project will also include significant improvements to the avionics. One of the aircraft is specifically set to receive a fully modernized digital cockpit, representing a gradual evolution of the C-130 fleet towards a more digitized environment.
These enhancements are expected to provide crews with better visibility of flight information, facilitate the management of various onboard systems, and improve operational efficiency. They could also help reduce downtime associated with maintenance activities.
For L3Harris, modernizing existing aircraft is a solution that allows the integration of advanced technological capabilities while retaining current platforms. This approach can also represent a less costly and less complex alternative than completely replacing a fleet with new military transport aircraft.
In addition to avionics and electronic upgrades, the program includes maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations, particularly on engines, as well as logistical support services designed to assist the aircraft throughout the project.
L3Harris announced in July 2025 the acquisition of a multiyear contract for the modernization of several C-130s operated by the Royal Moroccan Air Force. The program specifically aims to enhance fleet availability and extend its operational lifespan.
Boasting over four decades of experience in C-130 modernization, L3Harris has previously conducted similar programs for the US Air Force, the US Coast Guard, as well as for various international operators.
Through this program, Morocco aims to maintain the capabilities of one of the essential components of its military air transport capacity by combining the technological modernization of existing aircraft with maintenance and support operations to ensure their long-term availability.
