Moroccan Exports to Germany Surge by 21.6%

Moroccan exports to Germany experienced a remarkable increase of 21.6% in August 2026 compared to the previous year, reaching €251.79 million, equivalent to approximately 2.72 billion dirhams. Meanwhile, German exports to Morocco saw a decline of 9.7%, totaling €275.69 million, according to data released on October 8 by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis).

This development has significantly reduced Morocco’s trade deficit with its German partner. In August, this deficit was recorded at €23.90 million, down from roughly €98 million a year earlier. The narrowing of the two trade flows indicates a boost in Moroccan sales in the German market, coupled with a decrease in German deliveries to the Kingdom.

Morocco’s Trade Deficit Decreases in August

Trade exchanges between the two countries amounted to €527.48 million in August 2026. With exports to Germany at €251.79 million and imports from Germany at €275.69 million, the coverage rate of Moroccan purchases by sales to Germany increased to 91.3%.

When comparing to August 2025, a notable improvement in Morocco’s trade position becomes evident. Moroccan exports grew by approximately €45 million year-on-year, while German sales to the Kingdom declined by around €30 million.

This dual trend reduced the monthly deficit to under €24 million. However, the balance still favors Germany, as German exports to Morocco continue to exceed Moroccan sales in this market.

Nearly €5 Billion in Trade Over Eight Months

In the first eight months of 2026, bilateral trade between Morocco and Germany totaled €4.973 billion, equivalent to about 53.79 billion dirhams.

Moroccan exports to Germany reached €2.455 billion, compared to €2.519 billion for German exports to Morocco. Consequently, the cumulative Moroccan trade deficit stood at €63.98 million, nearly 692 million dirhams.

During this period, Moroccan sales covered 97.5% of merchandise purchases from Germany. The gap between the two trade flows represents approximately 1.3% of the total trade value, indicating a closer alignment of export and import levels.

Despite the improvements seen in August, the cumulative balance over the first eight months remains unfavorable for Morocco. The results from August alone are not enough to rectify the trade imbalance that has persisted since the beginning of the year.

Measured Value Growth, Not Necessarily Volume

Statistics published by Destatis measure merchandise exchanges in current value. The annual increase of 21.6% in Moroccan exports to Germany thus reflects a rise in their value without clarifying the extent to which this growth is attributed to higher sales volumes or changes in prices.

Additionally, the aggregated data does not detail the contributions of various industrial and agricultural sectors to this growth. A product category analysis would be needed to identify the sectors most responsible for the rise in Moroccan exports.

Decline in German Foreign Trade in August

On a broader scale, Germany experienced a 0.8% decline in its exports in August compared to July, after adjusting for seasonal variations and calendar effects. Conversely, German imports increased by 0.9% during the same period, according to Destatis.

These figures are based on seasonally adjusted monthly comparisons, unlike the raw annual variations used to measure exchanges between Germany and Morocco. Therefore, the two series should not be interpreted in the same manner.

The rise in Moroccan exports to Germany in August presents a positive signal for bilateral exchanges. Upcoming months will determine whether this trend continues and if it helps further reduce the Kingdom’s trade deficit with its European partner.
