American Farmers Advocate for Easier Access to Moroccan Phosphate Fertilizers
Moroccan phosphate fertilizers have emerged as a strategic issue for American agriculture. Seventeen organizations representing producers of corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, and other major crops have urged U.S. authorities to maintain the temporary suspension of tariffs on phosphate imports from Morocco.
In a letter addressed to the U.S. Senate, these organizations argue that this measure is essential for reducing production costs ahead of the 2027 agricultural season and ensuring a sufficient supply of fertilizers.
A Measure to Contain Rising Production Costs
The suspension of tariffs, announced on June 29 by the U.S. administration as part of measures related to fertilizer supply security, aims to increase the volumes available in the American market.
According to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, this decision could lead to a decrease of approximately 22% in phosphate fertilizer prices, thus easing the burden on farmers who are facing a continuous rise in production costs.
However, professional organizations argue that despite this expected decrease, fertilizer prices remain at elevated levels and continue to impact the profitability of farming operations.
Moroccan Phosphate at the Heart of American Agricultural Issues
The signing organizations represent producers from seventeen U.S. states, including Iowa, Texas, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Georgia.
They believe that fertilizers produced in Morocco provide a quick solution to bolster the available supply in the American market and support agricultural production as the planting season for 2027 approaches.
For these producers, improving access to Moroccan phosphates would help maintain the competitiveness of farms in a context marked by falling crop prices and increasing operating costs.
Accusations of Anticompetitive Practices
Beyond the issue of tariffs, agricultural organizations also denounce the concentration of the American phosphate fertilizer market.
They accuse major domestic producers of restricting supply to maintain high prices and have urged the U.S. Senate to encourage the Department of Justice to expedite its investigation into potential anticompetitive practices in this sector.
In this context, Moroccan imports are seen as a lever that could stimulate competition and improve fertilizer availability in the American market.
