CAF Champions League: AS FAR Falls to Mamelodi Sundowns and Loses Title Hopes

In a charged atmosphere at the Moulay Abdellah Complex in Rabat, AS FAR was unable to overturn the Mamelodi Sundowns during the second leg of the CAF Champions League final held on Sunday, May 24. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, which was insufficient for the Military team to secure the continental title.
Hrimat Sparks Hope Before South African Response
The Rabat team had kicked off the match in perfect form. In the 40th minute, Mohamed Rabie Hrimat converted a penalty, reigniting AS FAR’s hopes for a momentous victory. However, in first-half injury time, Teboho Mokoena cooled Moroccan ambitions by equalizing just before the break (45+7), leveling the playing field for both teams.
A Decisive Turning Point with a Missed Penalty
Riding the wave of support from the crowd, AS FAR continued to push in the second half in an attempt to turn the tide of the final. In the 77th minute, the Moroccans earned another penalty following a VAR intervention, presenting a golden opportunity to completely turn the match around.
This time, however, Hrimat missed his attempt, squandering a crucial chance that could have altered the fate of the match and the competition.
Sundowns More Realistic Throughout the Final
Having already won the first leg in South Africa (1-0), the Mamelodi Sundowns expertly managed their advantage with precision and tactical discipline. Solid defensively and effective during pivotal moments, the South Africans clinched their second CAF Champions League title.
A Promising African Campaign for AS FAR
Despite the disappointment, AS FAR exits the competition having showcased a remarkable journey, highlighted by great performances, competitiveness, and a strong playing identity.
This continental journey confirms the military club’s return to the African stage, even though the dream of a second continental star will have to wait a little longer.
