Marrakech: Ryad Mezzour Calls on Merchants to Innovate in Response to Sector Transformations

On Monday in Marrakech, Ryad Mezzour, the Minister of Industry and Trade, urged merchants to develop new solutions to adapt to the profound changes occurring in the sector, particularly digitalization and shifts in distribution networks.
A Central Role for Local Commerce
In his opening remarks at the National Trade Forum, held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the minister emphasized the importance of local merchants and small business owners, who play a vital economic and social role by providing close connections to citizens and access to essential services.
The Challenges of Digitalization
Regarding the digital transition, Ryad Mezzour noted that innovative solutions tailored to Moroccan merchants have been developed; however, the adoption of electronic payments remains limited. He attributed this to the low profit margins of small vendors, which range from 4% to 6%, whereas the costs associated with electronic payments can consume a significant portion of these margins.
Solutions to Reduce Costs
The minister clarified that efforts are underway in collaboration with several partners, including Al Barid Bank, to lower the costs of electronic transactions and make these services more appealing, particularly for daily operations such as mobile phone top-ups.
Modernizing Markets
Ryad Mezzour also announced a rehabilitation program for 289 markets, particularly in rural areas, out of a total of approximately 1,200 markets nationwide, aimed at improving their infrastructure and operations.
Reforms and Regulation of the Sector
Meanwhile, Mohamed Amine Souissi pointed out that the development of the sector aligns with royal directives aimed at improving the business climate. He stated that a model guide for unstructured economic activities is being developed to simplify administrative procedures and better regulate commercial activities through a clear classification between declarations, specifications, or prior authorizations.
A Forum Focused on “Moroccan Trade 2030”
Held under the theme “Moroccan Trade 2030,” the forum serves as a national platform for exchange among economic and institutional stakeholders, aimed at supporting the sector’s transformations and outlining its development prospects.
