Moody’s and S&P Assign Investment Ratings to Tangier Med That Exceed Morocco’s Sovereign Rating

Tanger Med Port Complex Achieves International Financial Milestone

The Tanger Med port complex has reached a significant milestone in its international financial development. The Tanger Mediterranean Special Agency (TMSA) has secured credit ratings from leading international agencies, thereby enhancing its credibility with investors and improving access to financial markets.

Moody’s Ratings has assigned TMSA a Baa3 rating with a stable outlook, while providing an internal assessment of Baa1 up until the end of 2025.

Meanwhile, S&P Global Ratings has awarded the Tanger Mediterranean Special Agency a BBB- rating, also with a stable outlook. The agency has assessed TMSA’s standalone credit profile at bbb, a rating that exceeds the sovereign rating of the Kingdom of Morocco.

Both agencies attribute these favorable ratings to several structural strengths that bolster Tanger Med’s competitiveness. They highlight its strategic geographical position at the crossroads of major global maritime routes, as well as its role as a major transshipment hub in the western Mediterranean.

Moody’s and S&P further emphasize the robust customer portfolio of the port, which consists of large international shipping companies benefiting from long-term concession contracts—an essential factor that ensures operational stability and greater resilience against market fluctuations.

The reports also underscore Tanger Med’s ability to adapt to changes in global maritime trade and its strategic role in enhancing Morocco’s integration into international logistics and trade chains.

According to the Tanger Mediterranean Special Agency, obtaining these ratings is the result of over four years of efforts to enhance financial transparency and governance practices, aimed at increasing its attractiveness to investors and international financial institutions.

The agency believes that these ratings will serve as an important lever for financing its future development program, facilitating access to international funding under more competitive conditions.
