Rising Coal Prices as Eid Al-Adha Approaches

Moroccan Consumer Protection Observatory Reports Surge in Charcoal Prices Before Eid Al-Adha

The Moroccan Consumer Protection Observatory has reported a significant increase in charcoal prices as Eid Al-Adha approaches. The price per kilogram has surged from approximately 7 dirhams to a range of 15 to 20 dirhams, a marked rise over a short period.

Seasonal Demand on the Rise

According to the same source, this increase is primarily attributed to a seasonal demand surge estimated at over 60%. Additionally, price disparities between cities and a decrease in supply in certain areas, linked to disruptions in distribution channels, have contributed to this spike.

Market Malfunctions Identified

The observatory emphasizes that the impact of rainfall and flooding on national production remains limited, highlighting other factors at play. These include a reduction in quantity available on the market, a proliferation of intermediaries, and profit margins that can reach 70%. Moreover, the absence of price displays at numerous sales points exacerbates the situation.

Call for Increased Regulation

In light of these circumstances, the observatory has pointed to the presence of seasonal speculation practices and artificial scarcity. It urges the relevant authorities to intensify regulatory controls, combat the withholding of goods, and ensure price transparency to protect consumers’ purchasing power.
