Tanger Med Ranks Sixth Worldwide, Confirming Its Leadership in Africa
Tanger Med Port Maintains Its Position as a Leading Global Maritime Hub
The Tangier Med port complex has confirmed its status as one of the major international maritime hubs by ranking sixth worldwide in the latest edition of the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI). This achievement also allows the Moroccan port to retain its top position in Africa.
Published in June 2026 by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, the ranking evaluates the performance of approximately 400 ports around the globe. The sixth position held by Tangier Med underscores its growing significance in international trade and global supply chains.
This performance can be attributed to the strategic location of Tangier Med, situated near the Strait of Gibraltar at the junction of the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans. The port also benefits from a vast logistical network and close connectivity with industrial zones, logistics platforms, and key production and export basins within the Kingdom.
Over the years, Tangier Med has evolved into a strategic platform that goes far beyond mere container handling. Its integration with transport infrastructures and industrial and logistics zones has strengthened its role in supporting both Moroccan and international businesses and connecting them to global markets.
On the African continent, Port Said in Egypt ranks second, holding the 15th spot globally. Its performance is largely due to its strategic location at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, one of the main maritime corridors linking Asia to Europe.
Djibouti’s port ranks third in Africa and 53rd globally. Its position at the entrance to the Red Sea gives it a crucial role in trade with countries in the Horn of Africa, particularly Ethiopia.
Egypt also has several port infrastructures ranked among the best on the continent. The port of Damietta holds fourth place in Africa and 105th in the world, while Ain Sokhna ranks fifth in Africa and 115th globally. Ain Sokhna benefits from its Red Sea location, proximity to the Suez Canal, and integration within the industrial and logistical ecosystem of the canal’s economic zone.
The port of Mogadishu comes in sixth in Africa and 127th globally, followed by the port of Dakar in Senegal, which ranks seventh in Africa and 144th internationally.
The Egyptian port of El Dekheila occupies the eighth position in Africa and 179th worldwide, allowing Egypt to place four ports among the top eight in the continental ranking.
San Pedro port in Ivory Coast ranks ninth in Africa and 211th in the world. It plays a significant role in the export of Ivorian agricultural products and serves the markets of western Côte d’Ivoire and neighboring countries.
Completing the African top ten is the port of Malabo in Equatorial Guinea, which holds the 222nd place globally.
Tanger Med’s leading position in Africa illustrates Morocco’s rise as a major logistics platform on the continent. It also confirms the impact of recent investments in port, industrial, and logistical infrastructures, as well as the Kingdom’s strategy aimed at enhancing its integration into international trade value chains and networks.
