Strengthening Strategic Ties Between Morocco and the U.S.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch welcomed U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau in an official visit to Morocco. The discussions focused on enhancing the strategic relationship between the Kingdom and the United States.
Reaffirming Historic Relations
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the meeting was attended by the U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan. Both parties emphasized the strength of their bilateral partnership, which has flourished under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and U.S. President Donald Trump. They also highlighted the deep historical ties that date back to the Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed in 1787.
U.S. Support for Morocco’s Position on the Sahara
The Prime Minister expressed Morocco’s gratitude following Washington’s reaffirmation of support for the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the Sahara, as well as its backing for the autonomy initiative as the basis for resolving the dispute.
Economic Cooperation and Investments
The discussions also addressed the development of economic and trade cooperation, specifically through the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation. Both sides highlighted investment opportunities in the southern provinces, particularly in renewable energy, green hydrogen, tourism, and agriculture.
Towards an Expanded Partnership
This meeting underscored the mutual desire to further strengthen a win-win strategic partnership and to broaden cooperation across various areas of shared interest.
