Zambia Affirms Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity

On Thursday, the Republic of Zambia reiterated its "firm and constant" support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, thereby strengthening diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797

In a joint statement released in Rabat, Zambia welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which endorses the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as a serious, credible, and sustainable basis for achieving a political solution to the regional dispute.

Backing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan

This stance was articulated following discussions between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Zambian counterpart, Mulambo Haimbe, who was on an official visit to Morocco. The Zambian Foreign Minister reaffirmed his country’s support for the efforts of the United Nations and for Morocco’s autonomy plan, which he described as a realistic and pragmatic solution for achieving a lasting political resolution.

A Political Approach Based on Compromise

According to the Zambian side, this initiative serves as a constructive foundation for reaching a solution acceptable to all parties involved, within the framework of the UN process.

Progressing Bilateral Relations

For his part, Minister Nasser Bourita acknowledged the positive development of relations between Rabat and Lusaka in recent years, notably marked by the opening of Zambia’s embassy in Rabat and a general consulate in Laâyoune in October 2020, reflecting the strengthening of cooperation between the two nations.
