Water and Energy: Morocco Strengthens a Sustainable Development Model in the Face of Climate Challenges

Addressing Water Scarcity and Energy Demand in Morocco
In an international context characterized by dwindling water resources, rising energy demand, and the growing effects of climate change, Morocco is implementing an integrated strategy aimed at enhancing its water and energy security. Inspired by the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this approach places the sustainable management of natural resources at the heart of the Kingdom’s development and sovereignty.
For over twenty years, Morocco has undertaken a profound transformation of its energy model while accelerating investments to ensure the availability of water resources. This policy has made the Kingdom one of the most advanced African countries in the fields of renewable energy and sustainable water management.
Renewable Energy on the Rise
The results of this strategy translate into a steady increase in green energy production capacities. By 2025, installed renewable energy capacity is expected to reach nearly 5.5 gigawatts (GW), accounting for approximately 45% of the national electrical capacity.
This development confirms Morocco’s commitment to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, strengthening its energy independence, and supporting its ecological transition commitments.
Dams: A Pillar of Water and Energy Security
Dams play a central role in this national strategy. Beyond their function in supplying drinking water, agricultural irrigation, and supporting economic activities, they also contribute to electricity production through hydroelectricity.
Today, Morocco has more than 154 major dams, offering a total storage capacity of around 20 billion cubic meters. These infrastructures are essential for addressing water stress, securing water resources, and enhancing the resilience of the national energy system.
Strategic Investments for Future Challenges
In response to the consequences of climate change, the Kingdom continues to launch major structural projects. The construction of new dams, the development of seawater desalination plants, the expansion of hydro connections, and the acceleration of investments in renewable energies illustrate this integrated vision.
The objective is to ensure a sustainable supply of water and energy while supporting economic growth and meeting the increasing needs of the population.
A Strategy Focused on Resilience and Sovereignty
In Morocco, water and energy are now seen as two inseparable pillars of sustainable development and national sovereignty. This approach is based on anticipation, innovation, and sustainability to effectively address the challenges posed by dwindling natural resources and the impacts of climate change.
By simultaneously strengthening its water and energy infrastructures, the Kingdom is consolidating its resilience and asserting its ambition to build a more sustainable development model capable of tackling the challenges of the coming decades.
