Morocco Becomes the UK’s Top Tomato Supplier, Outpacing Spain

Morocco confirms its rise in the British agricultural market by becoming the UK’s leading supplier of tomatoes, surpassing Spain, which held this position for several decades. This development reflects the profound changes in trade relations that have emerged since Brexit.

According to the latest data published by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, and Live Plants (FEPEX), coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the 2016 British referendum, Moroccan tomato exports to the UK have experienced remarkable growth.

In 2025, Morocco exported 126,203 tons of tomatoes to the British market, up from 49,843 tons in 2016, marking an increase of over 157% in less than a decade.

Brexit Reshuffles Agricultural Trade Dynamics

This growth occurs within a context of restructuring agricultural supply chains following the UK’s exit from the European Union. New customs, health, and administrative procedures have increased export costs for European producers, thereby opening up new opportunities for non-EU suppliers.

Conversely, Spanish tomato exports to the UK have significantly declined, dropping from 137,967 tons in 2016 to 57,458 tons in 2025, a decrease of approximately 58%.

As a result of this shift, Morocco has established itself as the primary supplier of tomatoes to the British market, confirming its growing role in agricultural exchanges between the two countries.

Enhanced Competitiveness Through Infrastructure and Logistics

The report emphasizes that this progress is not limited to tomatoes. Between 2021 and 2025, Moroccan exports of fruits and vegetables to the UK rose by 31%, increasing from 249,372 tons to 327,490 tons.

This strong performance is driven by several factors, including Morocco’s geographical proximity to Europe, the development of its export-focused logistics infrastructure, and the competitiveness of its agricultural offerings.

These advantages are enabling Morocco to sustainably strengthen its position among the leading suppliers of fresh agricultural products in the British market.
