Green Energy: Morocco Reaches a Milestone with the Local Issuance of I-REC Certificates

The Green Assets Cluster has officially launched its activities, becoming the first Moroccan organization accredited to issue international renewable energy certificates (I-REC). This advancement marks a significant milestone in the development of the green electricity market in Morocco and enhances the tools available to companies committed to their energy transition.
The announcement was made during the “Green Assets Connect” event, held on July 16 at Casablanca Finance City, in the presence of representatives from businesses, renewable energy producers, financial institutions, public stakeholders, and international partners.
An Essential Certification for Decarbonization
I-REC certificates (International Renewable Energy Certificates) certify that one megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity consumed originates from a renewable energy source, such as solar or wind energy.
This certification has become an essential tool for companies wishing to demonstrate their commitment to decarbonization, meet international market demands, and satisfy the expectations of customers, partners, and investors regarding sustainable development.
A Process Now Conducted in Morocco
Until now, Moroccan renewable electricity producers had to rely on foreign organizations to obtain these certificates.
With this accreditation, the Green Assets Cluster will now manage the entire process locally, from the registration of facilities to the verification of production data and the issuance of certificates in the international I-REC registry.
This development will simplify administrative procedures, reduce turnaround times, and provide localized support to green energy producers.
A Boost for the Competitiveness of Moroccan Companies
In a context where decarbonization requirements across value chains are tightening globally, this new capability represents a strategic lever for Moroccan companies focused on exports.
By facilitating access to I-REC certificates, the Green Assets Cluster aims to enhance the competitiveness of national producers and support companies in their environmental commitments.
This initiative also aligns with Morocco’s ongoing discussions aimed at establishing a national framework for green electricity origin certificates, a project set to bolster the energy transition and develop a low-carbon economy.
