Morocco Supplies Nearly Half of Spain’s Watermelon Imports

Morocco Maintains Its Position as Leading Watermelon Supplier to Spain for 2025-2026 Campaign

Morocco has retained its status as the top supplier of watermelons to the Spanish market for the 2025-2026 campaign. Its exports reached 52.68 million kilograms, with a total value of 44.23 million euros, accounting for 48.26% of Spain’s imports of this fruit.

According to data from the specialized site "Hortoinfo," based on statistics from "Estacom" and reported by the newspaper "La Razón," Spain imported a total of 109.15 million kilograms of watermelons between September 2025 and August 2026, with a total value of 91.86 million euros.

Moroccan exports saw a 6.3% increase compared to the previous campaign, rising from 49.57 to 52.68 million kilograms, an increase of over 3.1 million kilograms. The average import price of Moroccan watermelons was set at 0.84 euros per kilogram, aligning with the average of all Spanish imports.

In terms of suppliers, Senegal ranked second with 16.24 million kilograms exported, making up 14.88% of Spanish imports, valued at 11.8 million euros. Mauritania comes in third with 10.23 million kilograms and a market share of 9.37%.

These figures reflect the recovery of Moroccan exports after several campaigns that had experienced significant declines. The volumes shipped to Spain had reached a record high of 122.2 million kilograms during the 2021-2022 campaign, only to fall to 78.76 million kilograms the following season and further down to 28.7 million kilograms in 2023-2024.

In the last two campaigns, Moroccan exports have returned to growth, allowing the Kingdom to gradually strengthen its presence in the Spanish market. Although volumes remain below the levels recorded four years ago, Morocco continues to be the leading foreign supplier of watermelons to Spain.
