Morocco-Spain Trade: Exchanges Exceed 10 Billion Euros in Five Months

Morocco Confirms Its Status as Spain’s Main African Trade Partner

Morocco has reaffirmed its position as Spain’s leading trade partner in Africa. Driven by robust export and import dynamics, trade between the two countries continued to rise in 2026, showcasing the strength of the economic ties binding Rabat and Madrid.

According to the latest data published by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Business, bilateral trade reached €2.189 billion in May 2026. This consolidates Morocco’s position ahead of Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa among Spain’s African partners.

Increasing Trade in Both Directions

In May, Spanish exports to Morocco amounted to €1.144 billion, reflecting a 4.9% increase compared to the same period last year. These exports now account for 3.3% of total Spanish exports worldwide.

At the same time, Moroccan exports to Spain reached €1.046 billion, marking a year-on-year growth of 2.1%. These exports make up 2.4% of Spain’s total imports.

This upward trajectory has allowed Spain to maintain a trade surplus of €98.4 million for May alone, an improvement of €32.3 million compared to the same period last year.

Over €10 Billion in Trade Since the Start of the Year

During the first five months of 2026, trade between the two neighboring countries exceeded €10.107 billion, underscoring the robustness of their economic relations.

Spanish exports to Morocco totaled €5.256 billion, showing a slight increase of 0.2% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Spanish imports from Morocco rose to €4.852 billion, reflecting a 2.4% increase.

At the end of this period, the trade balance remains favorable to Spain, with a cumulative surplus of €404 million.

A Growing Strategic Economic Partnership

These results reflect the ongoing strengthening of trade between Morocco and Spain, two economies deeply integrated due to their geographic proximity, the complementarity of their industrial sectors, and the growth of investments on both sides of the Mediterranean. Thus, Morocco is solidifying its role as an essential partner for Spanish companies looking to expand their operations in Africa.
