Sahara: The Netherlands Supports Morocco’s Proposed Autonomy Plan

A Perspective Considered “Realistic” by The Hague

The Netherlands has expressed its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco for the Sahara, deeming it the “most feasible” solution to resolve this regional dispute. This stance was announced by Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen during a press briefing in Rabat.

A Statement Following a Bilateral Meeting

This position comes after talks between Tom Berendsen and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, during a working visit on April 7 and 8. The conclusions of these discussions were captured in a joint statement.

Support for United Nations Efforts

The Netherlands also reaffirmed its backing for UN Security Council Resolution 2797. Additionally, they support the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, to rekindle negotiations between the involved parties.

Aiming for a Sustainable Political Solution

According to The Hague, discussions should be geared towards achieving a political solution that is “fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable,” using the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a negotiating basis.

A Commitment to Diplomatic and Economic Action

Lastly, the Netherlands indicated that it will align its actions, both diplomatically and economically, with this position while ensuring respect for international law.
