Tanger Med: The Strategic Engine Driving Morocco to the Heart of Global Trade

Over the years, the Tanger Med port complex has evolved into a true lever for economic development in the Tanger region and across Morocco. Conceived as part of an ambitious strategic vision, the project now surpasses its initial port function, transforming into an international industrial and logistics platform.
This success illustrates the Kingdom’s capacity to develop world-class infrastructure capable of attracting investments and supporting its integration into the global economy.
A Structural Project Supporting National Competitiveness
During a speech at the World Congress of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), Jaafar Ammiar, the central director of port operations for the Tanger Med Port Authority, emphasized the crucial role of this strategic project launched in 2003.
According to him, Tanger Med has established an integrated economic ecosystem that combines port, industrial, and logistics activities. This synergy has significantly enhanced Morocco’s competitiveness on the international stage.
A Major Impact on Regional Development
The port complex has profoundly transformed the economic landscape of the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region. Its establishment has facilitated the setup of numerous industrial and logistics companies, contributing to the creation of thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
This dynamic has also accompanied a sustained population growth in the city of Tanger, which has become one of the Kingdom’s primary economic hubs.
A New Urban Dynamics for Tanger
One of the most notable effects of the project has been the relocation of major port activities away from the city center. This reorganization has allowed the old port of Tanger to be transformed into a space dedicated to tourism, leisure, and recreational activities.
Simultaneously, the redevelopment of the waterfront has contributed to modernizing the city’s image and enhancing its urban and tourist appeal.
A Strategic Asset for Morocco’s Integration into Global Trade
Thanks to its exceptional geographical location at the Strait of Gibraltar, Tanger Med has become a vital link in international logistics chains.
The port has significantly improved Morocco’s maritime connectivity, strengthened its presence in global supply networks, and attracted foreign investments in several high-value industrial sectors.
A Gateway to Africa
Beyond its national impact, Tanger Med also plays a major role in developing trade exchanges with the African continent.
The complex is connected to a vast network of shipping lines serving numerous African ports, particularly in West Africa. This connectivity facilitates the flow of goods between Morocco and its African partners while consolidating the Kingdom’s position as a regional platform for trade and logistics.
Complementary Infrastructure for Performance
Officials at Tanger Med also highlight the importance of the industrial zones, logistics platforms, and dry ports associated with the port complex.
These infrastructures help streamline supply chains, reduce logistics costs, and generate more added value for companies operating within the Tanger Med ecosystem.
Exporting Expertise Internationally
Building on its experience, the Tanger Med group is currently supporting several port projects across the African continent. This initiative aligns with a philosophy of cooperation, knowledge sharing, and skills transfer.
The goal is to support the sustainable development of African port infrastructures while fostering better economic integration across the continent.
