ONCF Strengthens Partnership with Hyundai Rotem for Long-Term Maintenance Contract of Electric Trains

The National Office of Railways (ONCF) has strengthened its cooperation with the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem by awarding a long-term maintenance and support contract for electric trains in Morocco. This contract, valued at an estimated 748.25 billion South Korean won, marks a new milestone in the modernization of the national rail network.
A Contract Beyond Simple Equipment Supply
According to a financial notification released by Hyundai Rotem on the South Korean stock exchange, the agreement goes beyond the mere delivery of rolling stock. It also includes a comprehensive suite of long-term technical support and maintenance services (LTSS), aimed at ensuring the operational availability of the trains and optimizing their performance throughout their lifecycle.
This integrated approach signifies a shift towards a more advanced industrial cooperation model between the two partners.
Toward the Creation of a Joint Venture
According to available information, the contractual commitments are expected to be transferred to a joint company that will be established between Hyundai Rotem and ONCF. This structure will be governed by a shareholder agreement between the two parties, with final terms to be specified once legal and regulatory procedures are completed.
This arrangement is set to facilitate more effective management of maintenance operations and improved technical coordination between Moroccan and Korean teams.
Strengthened Industrial Cooperation
This new contract illustrates the evolving partnership between ONCF and Hyundai Rotem, which has moved beyond the traditional supplier-operator framework to foster genuine long-term industrial cooperation.
The goal is to implement an advanced maintenance system based on performance monitoring, continuous optimization, and enhanced reliability of rail equipment.
A Catalyst for the Modernization of Morocco’s Rail Network
This project is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to modernize its rail infrastructure. Beyond acquiring new trains, this initiative emphasizes sustainability, safety, and quality of service.
Strengthening maintenance capabilities is thus a crucial element in supporting the expansion and modernization of the national network.
Hyundai Rotem Strengthens Its Presence in Morocco
On its part, Hyundai Rotem, a key player in the manufacturing of rolling stock and transport systems, is consolidating its presence in the Moroccan market. This partnership positions it as a strategic partner involved in the entire lifecycle of trains, from production to maintenance.
The upcoming phases of the project are expected to clarify the implementation modalities further, particularly following the establishment of the joint venture and the launch of competency transfer and technical training programs for local teams.
