Salé: Establishment of the Arab Union for Energy and Mines, Led by Morocco
The Arab Union for Energy and Mines Officially Launched
The Arab Union for Energy and Mines (AUEM) was officially established on Thursday in Salé, following its inaugural General Assembly. This marks the launch of a new institutional platform dedicated to enhancing Arab cooperation in the strategic sectors of energy and mining.
Gathering decision-makers, government officials, experts, and representatives from the private sector across various Arab countries, the meeting concluded with Morocco being unanimously elected as the Union’s president. The headquarters of this new organization will be located in Casablanca.
During the event, AUEM President Salah Eddine El Badry noted that the creation of this body is the result of an extensive consultation process among member countries, leading to a consensus on Morocco as the host nation for its headquarters.
In the context of regional and international fluctuations in energy markets, particularly oil prices, he emphasized that this organization addresses the necessity of coordinating visions and strengthening Arab cooperation in response to economic and energy challenges.
Ismaeil Al Janaby, a founding member of the Union’s Board of Directors, described this initiative as a “historic moment” for Arab integration. He underlined that the AUEM exceeds the framework of a mere institutional structure; it embodies a shared vision aimed at enhancing the ability of Arab countries to navigate global transformations.
He also highlighted the key areas of focus for the Union, including the integration of new technologies, the development of scientific research, the promotion of clean energy, and the reduction of carbon emissions in alignment with sustainable development goals.
The establishment of the AUEM comes at a time when energy and mining resources occupy a strategic position in issues of industrial sovereignty, economic security, and energy transition. The organization aspires to become a reference platform for promoting sustainable development and strengthening regional economic integration.
Among its priorities are developing partnerships between governments, businesses, investors, research centers, and universities, as well as reinforcing the presence of Arab countries on the international stage in the energy and mining industries.
The Union also aims to encourage both Arab and international investments, optimize the region’s natural resources, and contribute to the energy security of the Arab world. It will support the energy transition through backing projects related to renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy efficiency.
In the mining sector, the AUEM plans to promote international best practices, support innovation, technology transfer, scientific research, and Arab economic diplomacy.
Regarding governance, the organization will be structured around a Superior Council, a Board of Directors, a General Secretariat, an International Advisory Council, and several specialized commissions covering areas such as energy, oil, gas, mining, renewable energy, investment, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international relations.
With this establishment, the Arab Union for Energy and Mines intends to introduce a new dynamic of regional cooperation and transform the significant energy and mining resources of the Arab world into drivers of sustainable development, strategic partnerships, and investment opportunities.
