Automotive Industry: Japan Aims to Make Morocco a Strategic Hub for Europe

Japan Aims to Strengthen Morocco’s Position as an Industrial Hub for Automotive Components

Japan is set to bolster Morocco’s role as a key industrial platform for supplying automotive components to European markets. This initiative is part of Japan’s 2026 commercial strategy outlined by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), which relies on Morocco to enhance the resilience of its supply chains and to support a transition towards a more sustainable industry.

Morocco at the Heart of Japan’s Industrial Strategy

In its roadmap for 2026, METI identifies Morocco as a strategic partner due to its efficient industrial ecosystem, proximity to Europe, and attractiveness to international investors. The Japanese government aims to maintain and expand Morocco’s role as a production and export base for automotive components to Europe and other international markets. This direction continues the momentum established by the investment and trade cooperation memorandum signed between the two countries in Tokyo in November 2024.

Energy Security and Green Transition on the Agenda

Beyond the automotive industry, Japan’s strategy emphasizes several areas of cooperation with Morocco, including energy security, securing strategic resources, and the "Green Transformation" (GX)—a national policy aimed at accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Morocco is viewed as a capable partner that can support Japan’s ambitions in clean energy, industrial decarbonization, and the development of more resilient value chains.

Acknowledgment of Morocco’s Industrial Attractiveness

This new direction confirms Morocco’s rising significance in the global automotive industry. With its logistic infrastructure, free trade agreements, and the presence of numerous international manufacturers and suppliers, Morocco is emerging as one of the main industrial hubs linking Africa and Europe.

Japan’s expressed interest underscores the confidence that international partners have in the competitiveness of Morocco’s automotive ecosystem, which is expected to play an increasingly crucial role in global production chains and the development of technologies related to the mobility of the future.
